Battle of the Somme
The Battle of the Somme(BOTS) occurred in 1916. It was a joint operation of the British and French forces to drain the Germans of their resources as a primary goal, a secondary goal was to gain more territory. The plans for the BOTS was made a year before the battle actually occurred. BOTS is famous for the amount of lives lost on the first day, on July 1st, 1916 58,000 British troops were killed which was one third of the total British army numbers who were at the battle. BOTS started on July 1st and ran through till November 18th when the battle was called off. The Battle of Verdun changed the plans for the BOTS, at first the plans for BOTS was supposed to be a french only offensive but as the Battle of Verdun commenced the French did not an the manpower for a solo offensive. This required the French to get help from the British for the offensive. The BOTS also had the British implement tanks for the first time in WWI which helped them gain under a kilometer of ground on September 15th. As the battle ended on November 18th, people started to criticize Sir Douglas Haig's (A field Marshall in the British military) decisions and battle plans which caused great controversy.
